Overview
This page tells you about our most frequently-followed training options, and you can also read about our further training paths. Bikes are available to hire for all courses and tests. This includes automatic motorcycles ("scooters").
The road to passing your motorbike test
There are two main routes for passing your motorbike test including one option where you are limited to a 33bhp or normally a 250cc motorcycle after you obtain your licence and Direct Access where training takes place on 500cc motorbikes and once you obtain your licence you can ride any size motorbike.
The path to your licence involves the following stages regardless of your chosen route:
- CBT
- Theory Test
- Module One
- Module Two

CBT
This is the first step on the journey to obtaining your motorbike licence. Compulsory Basic Training or CBT has to be completed before you can ride a motorbike as a learner rider on the roads.
CBT consists of five elements:
- Introduction
- practical on-site training
- practical on-site riding
- practical on-road training
- practical on-road riding
Introduction
This includes an overview of the aims of the course, an eyesight test, legal document check and the importance of using the correct safety equipment.
Practical on-site training
This involves an explanation of the controls on a motorcycle including stopping and starting the engine, brakes, wheeling the motorbike and using the stand.
Practical on-site riding
This involves learning how to control the bike including stopping safely, slow riding, handling junctions and roundabouts
Practical on-road training
This is the briefing before you are taken out on the roads with your instructor. It includes safety pointers, legal requirements for riding a motorbike and the highway code.
Practical on-road riding
This involves a minimum of two hours out on the roads with your instructor.
DL196 Certificate of Completion
When you have succesfully completed all five elements of the CBT you will obtain the DL196 Certificate of Completion. This is valid for two years and allows you to legally ride a learner motorbike on the roads.
Module 1
Before moving on from CBT to taking both parts of the practical test you must first pass your Theory Test. You can find out more about this here.
Module One is the penultimate stage before getting your full motorbike licence.
The diagram below outlines what's involved in taking the Module One motorbike test.
Module 2 Practical Motorbike Test
This is the final hurdle to becoming fully licenced and is the on-road part of the test.

- Safety and balance questions
- Eyesight Test
- On-Road Exercises
- Angle Start - pulling out from behind a parked vehicle
- Stopping Safely including emergency stop
- Hill Start
Direct Access
This is basically the same training options as the standard path but takes place on 500cc motorbikes allowing you to ride any size motorbike once you pass.
